To visit the virtual 3D world Mandalay you must have an Active Worlds browser. The browser can be downloaded from www.activeworlds.com.

Mandalay is a square kilometer big and can take 20 simultaneous users. Mandalay was activated on February 24th 1998 and was opened after four months of work - on June 22nd. About 1/12 of it was finished by then - the forest at GZ, about a quarter of a seaside village, the lighthouse with an art gallery and my and Terte's home (still lacking lots of furniture). Now some rural landscapes, a valley with a glacier and another village are almost finished North of GZ.

Most of the objects are hand-coded using a text editor called EditPad (a great replacement for WordPad). A handful of more complicated things (mostly those with round structures) are made with Caligari trueSpace. I try to avoid using dedicated 3-D tools to keep the polygon count down. I also use RWXlook and RWXmod as viewers.

Except from the horses, cows and boats from the large collection Objects d'Active Worlds and a few of the flowers which are standard AW stuff, I've made everything myself in the above-mentioned way.

Because one of our goals is to make Mandalay look as real as possible I use textures from real life. Most of them are made from photographs taken by myself and scanned. Recently I've begun to use a digital camera - Nikon Coolpix 990. I use Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop for color-corrections, cropping and everything else.

Seaside village is inspired by a little town on the South-Western coast of Norway called Loshamn. The lighthouse and art gallery are inspired by a lighthouse and art gallery called Lista Fyr - located a few miles West of Loshamn. I had never been to any of those places when I recreated them - Terte sent me some postcards. She lives in that area in real life. But these places are just sources of inspirations - it has never been our intention to make exact virtual replicas. The newest village in the North East (called Town of Darkmere) is inspired by several places in Norway. The remaining four planned villages will probably also be inspired by real life places. One of them will be named Bougival and will has a French look because Bougival was the town where the hero of the Rocambole books grew up.

One of the things about Mandalay I am most satisfied with is that I have been able to camouflage the borders of the world. By means of some trickery Mandalay seems to continue all the way to the horizon in all directions instead of just suddenly stopping at the edge of the building area like all other AW worlds.

Many visitors have asked for the permission to build in Mandalay. It would be quite impossible to carry out our artistic plans and intentions with Mandalay if we allowed public building.

Our long-term plan is to turn Mandalay into an online adventure game. It probably will take years before everything is ready, though.
